Downtown Baptist ChurchChurch HistoryText Box: In February 1975, the Lord lay a vision on Pastor Hedger’s heart to start a church for the inner city people of downtown Sacramento. That became a reality in January 1976, when the doors opened for the first time at 2115 8th Street, where the church currently resides today. The property was rented and later bought from the Chinese Grace Bible Church. Over the past three decades, the Downtown Baptist Church has seen many come to Christ and many grow in the Lord. Downtown Baptist is a independent, fundamental, Baptist Bible-believing church with a message for this needy hour. After 32 years of praying, we are so grateful for the newest update to our church, our elevator, that allows those with handicaps or disabilities to attend our services.
Each Sunday, the bus picks up children and adults in New Helvetia and Seavey Circle, two nearby housing projects, to bring them to Sunday School. Once a month, the church ministers to the Union Gospel Mission through singing and preaching. DBC is able to reach the inner city people through ministries such as these. What a wonderful God we have!
Pastor Hedger was born in Crawfordsville, Iowa. He and his wife, Norma, have four grown children — David, Andrea Murphrey, Joshua, and Joel. They are also the proud grandparents of eight — Jessica, Lauren, Devin, Morgan, Cassidy, Harlie, Jacob, and Courtney.
